What is Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)?

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) designed to help individuals who are experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other trauma-related symptoms. Developed by Patricia Resick and colleagues, CPT focuses on changing the way people think about and interpret their traumatic experiences.

Here’s a basic overview of CPT:

  1. Understanding and Challenging Thoughts: CPT helps individuals identify and challenge unhelpful or distorted thoughts related to their trauma. This includes addressing negative beliefs about themselves, others, and the world.

  2. Processing the Trauma: The therapy involves revisiting the traumatic event and processing the emotions and thoughts associated with it. This helps individuals come to terms with their experiences and reduce their distress.

  3. Learning New Skills: Patients learn strategies to manage their emotions and develop healthier thought patterns. This includes recognizing and modifying cognitive distortions, and developing coping skills.

  4. Exposure to Trauma-Related Thoughts: Part of CPT involves confronting and discussing trauma-related thoughts and beliefs, which can help reduce their power and impact over time.

CPT typically involves a structured format, often delivered in 12 to 16 individual sessions. It’s shown to be effective in reducing PTSD symptoms and improving overall mental health and functioning.
