Bilingual Written Exposure Therapy | Virtual and In-Person Counseling

At Coast to Coast Bilingual Counseling, we offer Written Exposure Therapy (WET) as an innovative approach to address trauma. Our therapists use WET to help clients process and heal from traumatic experiences by writing about their memories in a structured, guided format.

This evidence-based therapy focuses on confronting and organizing distressing thoughts and emotions, reducing their impact over time. Effective for managing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and PTSD, WET provides a safe, supportive environment for individuals to work through their trauma. Located in North Carolina, our services empower you to achieve emotional resilience and recovery.

What is Written Exposure Therapy (WET)?

Written Exposure Therapy (WET) is a cognitive-behavioral therapy technique specifically designed to help individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other trauma-related conditions. It was developed by Edward B. Bormann and is a more focused and simplified form of exposure therapy.

Here’s a breakdown of how Written Exposure Therapy works:

  1. Writing About the Trauma: In WET, individuals are asked to write about their traumatic experiences in detail. This process involves describing the traumatic event and expressing their thoughts and feelings about it.

  2. Revisiting the Trauma: Writing about the trauma helps individuals confront and process their distressing memories. By repeatedly writing about the event, individuals can gradually reduce the emotional intensity and distress associated with the memories.

  3. Cognitive Processing: Through writing, individuals can begin to challenge and reframe their negative beliefs and thoughts related to the trauma. This helps in processing and integrating the traumatic experience more adaptively.

  4. Therapist Guidance: While much of the work is done independently, a therapist typically provides guidance, support, and feedback throughout the process. They help the individual interpret their writings and work through any difficulties that arise.

  5. Regular Practice: Individuals are usually asked to engage in writing exercises over a series of sessions. The frequency and duration can vary based on the individual's needs and progress.

WET is known for being a relatively brief and less intensive treatment compared to some other trauma therapies. Research has shown it can be effective in reducing PTSD symptoms and improving overall mental health.
