What is EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It’s a type of psychotherapy developed by Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s. EMDR is primarily used to help people process and integrate traumatic memories. The therapy involves a structured approach that includes:

  1. History Taking: Understanding the patient’s history and identifying targets for treatment.

  2. Preparation: Teaching the patient techniques to manage emotional distress.

  3. Assessment: Identifying specific memories to target and the negative beliefs associated with them.

  4. Desensitization: Using guided bilateral stimulation (usually through guided eye movements) to help process and reduce the distress associated with the traumatic memories.

  5. Installation: Fostering the development of positive beliefs to replace negative ones.

  6. Body Scan: Checking to see if any physical tension remains related to the trauma.

  7. Closure: Ensuring the patient feels stable and using relaxation techniques if needed.

  8. Reevaluation: Assessing the progress and addressing any remaining issues in follow-up sessions.

The eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation (like tapping or auditory tones) are believed to help the brain process and integrate the traumatic memories, making them less disturbing. EMDR is often used to treat PTSD, but it can also be effective for other types of trauma and emotional disturbances.
