What is DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy)?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan. It was originally designed to treat borderline personality disorder (BPD) but has since been adapted for various mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. DBT combines cognitive-behavioral techniques with principles of mindfulness, acceptance, and emotional regulation.

Here are the key components of DBT:

  1. Mindfulness: This involves being fully present in the moment and aware of one's thoughts, feelings, and environment without judgment. Mindfulness helps individuals observe and accept their experiences rather than react impulsively.

  2. Distress Tolerance: This focuses on building skills to manage and tolerate distressing emotions and situations without resorting to harmful behaviors. It includes techniques like self-soothing, distraction, and improving the moment.

  3. Emotional Regulation: This component teaches strategies to understand, manage, and change intense emotions. It helps individuals recognize and alter emotional responses and develop healthier ways to cope with their feelings.

  4. Interpersonal Effectiveness: This involves improving communication skills and learning how to assert oneself while maintaining healthy relationships. It includes strategies for asking for what one needs, saying no, and handling conflict effectively.

DBT typically involves a combination of individual therapy and phone coaching. The therapy is structured around a commitment to change and a focus on balancing acceptance with the need for change. The goal is to help individuals build a life worth living by enhancing their ability to manage emotions, improve relationships, and achieve their personal goals.
